The book highlights the history of development of knowledge in medieval, modern and contemporary history of India in the British, Indian and Russian science, as well as in several other countries. The author deals only with the development of modern science, i.e. from the late 18th century to the present time. The scholar marks both the particularities of the national schools of the history and the general laws of development of science. The nonscientific factors that influenced the research methods and results are also under consideration. The history of science is presented not only as a competition of ideas, but also through the biographies of personalities who created it. The book is illustrated with portraits of some of the historians of India. This edition is intended for Indologists, historians of the East, and for all those who are interested in the history of science and Russian history.
